Cage

Today the 10 of us, me, Alvin, Benng, Manfred, Hiok Yang, Ziheng, Ervin, Teng Chuan and Justin and Parry (can you believe it!) went to the Cage at Kallang to play street soccer. This event was made possible by Manfred who kindly helped us book and pay for the venue in advance. We took a train down and had almost the whole carriage to ourselves. But dehn…, the train had some technical fault and we had to alight to wait for the next train.

Soccer at the cage was tiring but fun. We played a total of around 4-5 matches and played with different teammates each time. The overall top scorer was hiok yang who muscled his way easily around everyone. However the real men of the match were Justin and Parry who played the best and were the most hardworking throughout the matches. Parry deserves particular mention as he saved all the balls while he was playing keeper.

My holidays were quite boring. Other than going for training or doing some project I seldom go out. I spend a lot of time on dota. New version came out, makes the game more exciting. No rampage pictures to post. Ksing nt my style. Recently I only get triple. >:( Played a bit of cs too. Quite bad at it though. Probably the worst holiday I ever had, with all the stress coming from work. Only regret would be not watching transformers 2.

Sorry for the late post. Well..part of my hols were spent on doing projects and schoolwork. During the hols I also played soccer and basketball occasionally.

I attended the VJC workshop with some of my classmates, it was an enjoyable experience which i will never forget. I learnt many useful and interesting stuff there as well.

Another highlight was the Da vinci exhibition which i went with ben ng and KTC as part of our geog project. The exhibition was rather interesting but i think they wasted too much space on analyzing the Mona Lisa painting.

The main event during my hols was the chemistry project which i embarked on with Jianwei and Manfred. I think i dont want to talk much about it....

Besides doing work and project, most of the time was spent relaxing and slacking around and taking a well deserved break after the hectic first semester.

i was the hike ic, so i had to walk to ecp from bishan 2 times, one for recce, one for actual ting

its actually quite near lor, walk 3 hours reach alr

since im so passionate abt chemistry, its no surprise dat im taking part in a chemistry project with jianwei n alvin, teacher mentor is mr koh

its abt making an IL (1,1,3,3-Tetramethylguanidinium propionate) using tmg n propionic acid, den using it to extract artemisinin from some artemisia annua leaves

it sounds damn cheem, but actually not dat hard, jus dat we hav to put in a lot of time and effort

oso, we r risking our lives in dis project, cos a lot of the shit is toxic n harmful

see? dis is how enthu we r for science

so far we alr made the IL, dis is how we did it

1st we mix tmg and propionic acid together using ethanol as the solvent

propionic acid stinks like hell, damn disgusting

and tmg fumes r poisonous

so we do our work in fume hood, but at the start mr koh say cannot bring the weighing balance into fume hood, so we do outside, den end up we inhale a lot of the shit, its a miracle we r still here

k after dat we stir it using magnetic stirrer, leave it for 2 hours, den after dat we hav to remove all the ethanol and other impurities so dat we get our il

so we mus use rotatory evaporator, the ting keep turning, den got heat n reduced pressure, so the ethanol will be removed, since got lower bp

after dat we add activated carbon, which is charcoal, den do the stirring plus the evaporation again

den we put into vacuum dessicator to suck, dat one damn disgusting, got grease on it, n its yellow la

den in the end we get our precious il

so dis took up quite a lot of the hols as well

well...played and slacked quite a bit, but it was a very busy hol. Started off with interact camp, although i had to miss out on the CIP event thingy coz i had to go for SMO =( and found myself intrigued by SAW V. hmm… dunno if that’s good or bad. Also went for the 2 VJC courses which Jack already posted about below, so won't elaborate on them.
Erm rest of hols was mostly projects…

Hi guys!

I have been trying to attach photos to my blog post but the thing just keep failing. So dun blame me for this empty looking post.

Anyway, I was really busy during the hols. Just to name some of the many activities, I had the VJC workshop*, the many project meetings, preparation for NPCC midyear camps and the camp itself.

Since i should talk about soemthing unique here, i shall share more about my camp, which was held on the 22nd to 24th june. That was the last NPCC camp that i will attend, and be in charge of. Throughout these 4 years, i have been to about close to 10 camps already under NPCC. This last one was nothing special on the appearance, but I tried to make it special for myself since its the last one. And sleeping a total of 3 hours for 3D2N was indeed an unforgettable experience.

Those many UG kids in 4T will know the standard framework of any camp. Let me just tell you guys planning a camp is much more draining than going through it. Editing proposals after proposals, going to NTUC buying 300 bucks worth of food and pushing 2 full trolleys back to school was part of my job. Haha.

Anyway, during the camp, the highlight was the traditional HELL HOUR again. As the name suggests, campers will have to go through close to an hour of HELL. What hell have i been through as a camper? Well, the first year i was treated to some dough making session where the seniors make dough on your hair and shirt with egg and flour. Then i experience the roti prata session on Raffles green. Seniors wet the field and make us roti prata with the mud.

So, being creative and original, i treated my sec 1s to a combination of both. Roti prata, including the flour and the egg. You might think its cruel and now you might be cursing NPCC for being inhuman. But frankly, in a UG CCA, I won't think that you will remember the drills and campcraft for the rest of your life. What you will remember is the shit that you go through with your squadmates, and hell hour is just one of them.

Ok another highlight which explains why i slept so little was the night hike. 2nd night starting from 2 am, some sec 4s including manfred and i and mr koh hiked with the sec 3 batch to East Coast for the sunrise. I was totally energy-drained already and just kept walking and walking, although that was not the first time I am doing this.

Anyway, yeah. This camp sort of reminds me that my stint as ccal is gonna end soon. It wasn't easy, but it was rewarding. As i always use this analogy, "In NPCC, you be 3 years of dog and in the 4th year you get to be the dog trainer. " Haha, dun worry, its not THAT cruel, its just an analogy. So im almost done with being a trainer! Happy or sad, i still haven figure out.

During the June Hols 1st week, I was sick. Then second week onwards mug project.

I went to Jalan kayu for SS project, Science Centre for Geog project. Quite fun. Science Centre had these shows, Tesla coil show. One can see the vast amount of discharge, damn cool. Then Parry and I watched that science magic show, which is damn lame. yeh tats about it. XD

Each Friday night after work, Santa Singh would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a tandoori chicken and some meat kebabs. But, all of his neighbours were strict Catholics .... and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating chicken and meat on a Friday.

The delicious aroma from the grilled meats was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their Priest. The Priest came to visit Santa, and suggested that he become a Catholic. After several classes and much study, Santa attended Mass ... and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, “You were born a Sikh, and raised a Sikh, but now, you are a Catholic."

Santa’s neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived. The wonderful aroma of tandoori chicken and meat kebabs filled the neighbourhood. The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he rushed into Santa's backyard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.

There stood Santa, holding a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meats and chanted: "Oye, you waz born a chicken, and you waz born a lamb, you waz raised a chicken, and you waz raised a lamb but now yara, you are a potato and tomato"!

For the first week of my June Holiday, I was at my red cross camp. In the camp, I was mainly doing preparations for our campfire. Other than that, it was quite slack. For the next two weeks, I was playing com games, doing a bit of homework and projects, and going out with my family over the weekends. I also found a program that allows you to play piano on the computer (but I dunno how to play piano).

For the last week of holiday, I was chionging my projects. That’s about it for my holidays.

My holidays were busy with lots of school stuff. First week got camp, quite fun cos' Sec 4s dunnit do anything only need to supervise :). Second week got Bio DMP which is a total waste of time, spend 40 hours just surfing internet for info. Then 3rd and 4th week was spent chionging all the remaining projects and homework, especially SS Doc. Our group went to lots of NICE locations to film like Esplanade and Biopolis..Yea so thats how I spent my hols..no pictures to post though.

I spend most of my holidays doing work and training. So the first week was basically spent on doing homework and training. We went to the IRAS for out learning journey and it was quite fun. The second week was the same old boring thing again, chionging the homework, projects blah blah... and also training. In the third week I went for camp which was fun... Did a lot of stupid things . I was sick for the first few days of the fourth week but I did recovered. Went to do geo project with jon koh and Brandon and then went to watch Transformers which was super nice. So thats how I spent my holidays.

There was fishing, playing cards, bites, and hiking of course.

The next week of the holiday was spent doing Bio Stem Cell DMP from 9am-6pm. An utter waste of time. The final 2 weeks were spent on projects and project meetings.

My holidays started off with Venture Camp, a camp for scouts. and since Jack already explained it, i shall not elaborate further. Anyway, heres the picture of the shelter me, ziheng and sup built.

Ok then there was VLC, venture leadership course, where we learnt stuff like making proposals, leading, delegating etc. stuff that most of us already know. And the last 2 weeks were used for projects. I spent my weekends eating quite a bit, because my bro's in the army and everytime he comes back we will go for a meal (: and also watched movies and spend time going out having fun. I dun really take pictures so theres nothing much to see

My first week of the holidays was spent in school, where I was attending a Red Cross Camp. So, no work was done in the first week of school. As for the second week of school, I was mainly at home, working on a math performance task and doing some Chinese worksheets. On the third week, I was still working on projects and occasionally playing computer games. On the fourth week, I spent most of the time going out to do projects. So, you can see that most of time was spent on work, work and more work. So boring, but there is nothing that I can do. Well, I played some computer games and here is a screenshot of me getting a ”rampage” in the latest version of DOTA(a special screenshot for dota fans out there). LOL!

been a very busy holiday. got too many projects to do. now still havent finish all.

anw, went to desaru, malaysia at the end of week 2 of the hols.

short trip (2D1N) with my family, which was a good time for relaxing and getting away from singapore's hot weather. i realised that trips to malaysia may not be that bad after all, if you go to parts which you haven't gone before. at desaru, we spent quite a bit of the day in this fruit farm. this trip's supposed to be about fruits, so there were lots of fruits to try. one of the more interesting fruits was the breadfruit, which can only be eaten after its cooked/fried. we also visited this ostrich farm and i got to see the ostrich yolk and white for the first time in my life. the yolk is GIGANTIC. we spent our night and the most of the 2nd day at a comfy beach resort, where we even played beach volleyball.
sadly, after the two days, i had to go back to projects.

My holidays were just mainly trying to finish up my homework and projects. Hardly had any time to myself to go out or do anything fun. Did play some com games though, during my limited free time but mostly was just trying to chase people to do their part of the projects (cough*cough). Anyway, there's one day that I was supposed to go Chinatown with Ming Chan and Brandon to finish the geog tourism project. As you can see from the pic here. I expected to take abt 1hr to walk up and down chinatown to take photos but on that day, half the time spent was just stoning there, took abt 6 photos, then decided to go watch transformers (lol). Movie was quite cool, nice effects but storyline wasnt too good. Later had to go and do greenwave in library, yah but that was one of the few days I had fun............. :-)

My june holidays was a very fun one. Tis time i decided to push back all the hw until last wk, so i had 3 wks of slacking (aka fun). First week had interact camp. during first 2 days of the camp was a bit sick, so had to wear a mask to school. den walk around school kenna spotted by mr. kwok, who tell me i very guai :D and responsible, ask me continue wear mask.

First week also had 1 tabletennis competition. Din do well, kenna kick out in 2nd round by small margin 2-3.

2nd and 3rd week roughly the same, tabletennis training den another tabletennis competition. Tis time did better go until top16 den lose to the eventual runner-up. from week 2 we stopped school training, so had to go back to pri sku to train pingpong. all my pri sku juniors (p6 ones) all dun wan to come RI, they say they stupid stupid de.

My slacking for the first 3 weeks was : playing neopets (few hrs per day), staring at the sky (morning & evening), watching dramas (when i get sick of neopets), listening to radio (all the time), sleeping (at night. LOL) and doing CIP (i did a few, but not getting CIP hours for them :'()

4th week, still go back pri sku training, but start on some work alr. Also have to mug scrabble like siao bcos our competition is nxt wk. Now still mugging scrabble.

We just finished our finals against Montfort today. It was super close and eventually won 3-2
Our plan was to win the 2 doubles and one of the singles... but our lineup wasnt THAT good... cause montfort's plan was to win the 3 singles...our first singles was... isryad (I think its spelt like that..)

ROY... He was playing some super duper short but imba guy... It was super close but he eventually won with he pro skills... His composure, accuracy, strength, speed, guailan-ness was all at its max. I'm here to post about my holidays and keep the ball rolling (:
Unlike Jack's holidays which is so "colourful", my holidays is only made up of 2 main colours:

For the first two weeks, my family went to China to visit relatives and also to update ourselves on any new developments of the town. The town we went to is named Wuxi, which is quite near to Shanghai. For the photo, I shall post a picture we have taken in the late afternoon.

For the next two weeks after I came back, I spent most of my time mapling. This screenshot shows how long have I maple-d during one of the days.

My so-called Holidays

Im going to post some pictures and write about the topic: My so-called Holidays. Make you sure guys do the same hor! =D

The first event for my holidays was my 01 Venture Camp! And the photo you see below is actually the shelter Alvin Chua and I built for our survival night, where we could only use the natural materials found in the forest. All these is made from trees! (note: we found the tree stump, we didnt chop the tree down.)

So that was one of the highlights of the camp, and the next was cooking by the beach and marshmellows in the night! Cool right, ok maybe a bit warm...

Alright, so right after the fun fun venture camp, was the interclass basketball! Which I didnt play for because I was the guy recording scores...haha. But got some photos of our class in action too.

After that was the MOE conference, and then the Learning Journey to IRAS, and soon the Chem workshops (2 of which I have posted about).

And then I had some more scouts stuff! Cos we had a den cleanup, and then it was another venture camp- the Venture Leadership Camp. Its organised by the HQ, so we got to meet scouts from other schools too! Good exposure for us! =) Learnt quite a bit from that camp too! Here is a photo of my ex-co! =D

After the camp, was getting back to work...all the 8 or 9 projects which we have...scary. Also went to meet Viriya for our Cohort CIP, the Home Creation. We discussed about what we need to do and what we have tobe concerned about, and then I prepared a briefing sheet of sorts which none of you will see becos I dont think any of you wanted to sign up for 2NA. Haha. Oh yes, 2NA is going to be postponed...due to H1N1.

The last week, still all about projects! But there is of course some fun in it! If anyone wants to see a nice video about our class feel free to come and look for me! (ok i know we all cant feel free...lol)

This hols had been a hectic one for me (I think it applies to all).

But there was fun.... like working till 4 am for CCC, KTVing, visiting Marina Barrage (see below), table tennising, NPCC Camp, etc.

Only disappointment is the missing out on the "all expense paid for" trip to Japan... haiz.. nvm, maybe next time....

VJC Chem Workshops!

Today a group of us went to VJC for some fun chemistry workshops!! We signed up voluntarily and we weren’t disappointed. (Alvin, Teng Chuan, Manfred, Jian Wei, Mervyn, Dominic, Ben Chin, Jim and Me) We went into the VJC campus, and after the registration, travel declaration and stuff, we took a walk around before entering the lab.

Our first workshop was titled: Snacks- Recipe for a Horizontally Developed Body? It was basically about what our food is made up of and what make you fat. So to get us awake he showed us some random videos…about turning water into ice and some painting video haha. But quite interesting la. He also explained how the 2008 compound of the year- melamine, increases the protein level in milk, haha. Anyway the lesson proper, first part is about the stuff we learnt in bio, like all the carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, plus trans fats. But then the second part was about reading nutritional labels on food. And like how calories are used in our body- 60% on Basal Metabolic Rate, 30% on Movement and 10% on Dietary Thermogenesis. Also how to gain weight, haha, for those underweight people! LDL (“bad”)and HDL (“good”)cholesterol, and about the only food with negative calories! The celery! Im just writing out the concepts, find out why yourself! Or ask the people who went! =D

Then we had an activity where we were all given something like this:

Regret not going right…lols. Anyway, we could choose to keep what we were given, or do a one to one swap among ourselves, where we could exchange something we don’t like for something we like. And at the end, the calorie values were given and we could actually measure how much we would have gotten. Mr Lim told us that, the amount of calories given at the start was actually what is required in a meal, about 600+ calories, but we wont feel full even after eating whats in the bag! Due to the nature of the food…hmm…think about it…Oh and yes, we got to keep the food. =P haha.

Ok so after that we sort of had an empty slot, so we went out to lunch together at Parkway Parade. It was quite fun going all the way there to eat, at least something different from the usual J8. Hm..ok maybe not, cos we still ate at a restaurant J8 has in the end… Well, after lunch some people had a change in plans…

Anyway, we* went back to VJC and had our second workshop titled: Going Bananas!- The Chemistry of Flavours. We learnt that flavor is actually a combination of taste, sensation and colour transmitted by receptors in the taste buds. And esters are a key component of the aromas of fruits (carry the bulk of the signals). Esters tend to have distinctive, generally pleasant odours, and are made from the reaction between carboxylic acids and alcohols. Flavours are usually created using a complex mixture of esters, and food manufacturers use them to make artificial flavouring.

We learnt 2 methods of synthesizing esters. Method 1 is simpler to understand: Condensation reaction of alcohol with carboxylic acid. The 2 chemicals we used are Methanol and Butanoic Acid, and we also needed to use c. sulfuric acid as catalyst, and heat it over a boiling water bath. Cant heat it over a naked flame, as alcohol is flammable. We got a smell closest to that from an apple from this experiment! Ok, fine we couldn’t really tell that well…(remember a flavor is made up of a combination of esters?) But still we had to learn how to draw the structure of the methanol and butanoic acid, and how they eventually formed the ester with the apple smell, and of course water, being a condensation reaction. The very nice teacher’s assistant taught us this! (something like Xin Yan, Yen San or Zhao Yuan…haha) So we had to know how to identify an ester. It’s a C with one single C-O bond and one double C=O bond, so it’s like O-C=O. That’s an ester.

As for Method 2, the reaction of alcohol with ethanoic anhydride, it was basically similar steps in doing it, but adding different stuff. We added alcohols such as: Octan-1-ol, Propan-1-ol or 3-methyl-1-butanol, to an acid derivative, Ethanoic Anhydride. Think its because the acid derivative is more reactive… So, from these, we got the smells of orange, pear and bananas!! (respectively) Again, these smells aren’t that obvious, except for the banana, which most of us are able to tell because it has a more distinct smell. Really nice! Haha. After that, this time, they only showed us the chemical formulas for the substances, and wanted us to draw out the structures of the esters that would form as a result. Slightly difficult to understand at the start, but simple once you get the hang of it, haha. Its quite interesting how they are able to tell the information of the substance from its name…like the prefixes: Met means 1 C, Eth means 2 Cs, Prop is 3 Cs, But is 4Cs, and Hep is 5Cs. (a lot of Singaporeans like Hep? Haha!) The teacher said that we are going to learn this in organic chemistry! And, we have to remember up to 10 Cs for our A levels…yea so learn 5 first lor… and then also if the name ends with –ol then its an alcohol, with an OH functional group…yea this sort of thing.

We were also supposed to do it in something called the reflux setup, which actually just means heating with an attached condenser which helps to condense the vapours which evaporated back into liquid form for heating, as the organic compounds are very volatile.

This second workshop has a lot more new content for us, still the level pitched was okay, not too difficult or easy, so its understandable la. We were a bit overwhelmed at first, but after a while, with some help from the assistants, we were good to go, haha. And its quite fun to get to conduct the experiment yourself, and smell the fruit flavouring you created!

Overall, I enjoyed both the workshops very much! And we had quite a fun time engaging in the activities while having learning chem! These workshops have given me a chance to get to see more of the uses and applications of chemistry! =)

Ok... I'll update about what I've been doing...

Not too enriching like Jack's but also not so boring like Xinyan =P

Basically, I've had a couple of swimming lessons... not dunking lessons.. so now I am slightly better at it...

Besides that, I've been working on a Chemistry research project with some boys.. quite interesting, but at the same time rather frustrating when you hear "broke this, broke that"...

Then there is the usual work of cos.. planning of lessons, how to ensure students die a horrible death in tests (Disclaimer: Joking only), etc lar...

Work Exposure!

Haha sorry Im not going to blog about my OIP...maybe yet...because I havent actually gotten the full collection of photos there yet, some were lost in Hanoi haha. But it was indeed very meaningful doing all the CIP and also a lot of fun making friends and learning more about the culture in Vietnam! Haha hopefully this can help the few of us who went get to know Viet and Nam better! Haha.

Anyway, back to my main point about the work exposure programme. Felt like writing about it because I think Im the only one in class who went, and thought that I should share, haha. For the past week, I have been attached to Mandarin Oriental Hotel, near Marina Square, together with Jim, and some other students from our batch. We even spotted some of our seniors who worked there last year on WEP back to work part-time! Haha, you see hopw fun it can be...lols. Well, it isnt all that bad actually. Im working with the festive desk, doing all the christmas stuff, like getting the things from everywhere to make a christmas hamper. From getting the pastries, to packing, wrapping, carrying, delivering and even food tasting!!(lol)

But other than working itself, I have also gotten to learn many things required in work. One of them would be knowing how to work with different kinds of people. In our jobs, we also get redeployed sometimes to other departments just for an afternoon or something to experience work in different departments. Hence, the people we face are all very different, males, females, old, young, nice, AP, upstairs kind, and not-so upstairs kind. It is really important to know how to work with them, because it makes your work easier, you learn faster, and feel happier! (and you dont fall asleep so easily...) Another thing is about discipline...of course there is, even a simple thing like the time you start work, or whether you wear your uniform properly, and what you do in your 'free time', can tell a lot about you...guess thats a little like school? Haha. But in the workplace, its a little more up to you...there are times when boring jobs are assigned to you...like one which we are getting so often, wiping plates and utensils. For restaurants, weddings, meetings, and other functions...Im pretty sure there were thousands of them...lols, shouldnt be surprising though. =) So to sum it up, I really enjoyed my work experience so far, and I learnt a lot! Some photos maybe? Haha.

OIP-Taichung (MingDao High School)

Hi all, Ervin here. Since I'm the only one from 3T to go to Taiwan, I have the sole honour of sharing about the trip here. Students who went for OIP Taichung were sec3 and sec4 interactors. 22 students, 2 teachers (Mrs Tay and Mr Daniel Chua). The trip was split into 2 segments, the first being the homestay and the second being our stay in the mountains at a 'resort'. For the first part, we were attached to a buddy. We attended their lessons and slept in their homes. Their classroom size is about the same as ours, but they have 48 students per class.

To Michael, Marvin, Jon, Tina and Jane: Thank you for joining our class, even if its just for that short week or so! It has really been a joy to have you people in our class, and I bet that we all agree that we have learn a lot from you!

Sad...that they eventually have to leave, and now there seems to be a gap in the class...(both emotionally and physically, haha) Dont know about the class, but at least I feel comforted to know that I have treasured the presence of the visitors in our class, and really 'made full use of them'. Hope that the rest of the class also did interact and learn from them, and not take these visitors for granted! Hey everyone, seems like quite some time since the last post...anyway, today our soccer players did very well, and won BOTH our matches against 3R and 3K today! The score was 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. It was really great to see our class try their best in all the matches today, especially since we are up against strong opponents today, both of which are amongst the top few in the soccer league table so far. So, yeah, we played well, still maintaining the clean sheet. (which someone is so proud of, haha) So, congratulations to the team! And also to all those who went down to support the team at school today! today we had interclass soccer and we won 3h easily with a convncing scoreline of 2-0. manfred scored both goals of the game. The first goal he scored was a freekick. I still don't know why Ben chin and manfred think that i dived to get the freekick. i seriously didn't dive, i was tripped and i fell down. seriously.. The second goal oso manfred score one, a tap in. We could have won the game by a larger scoreline if not for poor refreeing. 3h simply could not attack. our defense also did a great job, ben chin, ben ng and ervin. I tink ervin almost broke someone's leg. Roy also played well. i also heard that hullet won chinese cultural camp, ervin don't be sad..

Rugby Finals

Today was Chem CCT! Which Mr Koh said is primary school level...but I have a question (or 2): Why never test more on the properties of the different structures? Then so much on the separation techniques...

Today is also the rugby finals, which RI has never reached for the past __ years and so is very important to RI. They even postponed the CCTs, ended school earlier, made it compulsory for 16 classes to go down and support and announced it so frequently... So some of us did go down, but forgot who cos Mr Koh just said ok attendance marked but nothing leh. We lost to ACS(I)...but it was so close, they just scored 5 points close to the end and from 11-10, the score became 11-15. Nothing to say.

Ok, I didnt really see much of the rafflesian spirit everyone was talking about, but it is definitely better then usual (i think). Personally, it felt quite heartwarming when I saw the public, RGS, RPA, RJC and even SJI people cheering and supporting us...as for ourselves...Im not too sure. =P

I admit that amongst the crowd and excitement and other people taking photos, I forgot to take any photo there, so sorry. But I have one here, lol. If any of you have any photos you took, please upload!! And hope you can feel the excitement we felt from this...(i dont think so...)

For the past months or so, our class has been actively decorating the classroom, with all the leaves at the windows and the notice boards, the tree, the grass, the signs, the pictures, etc. And just wanted to say that it feels really good to see the whole class putting in a lot of effort! For those who havent done so much/well this time, please reflect on it and try to do more next time! Now, lets do our best for the final days of the inter-class deco competition, and touch up on everything we have. Then, we can put our minds into the CCTs and score! Lol, anyway here are a few pictures I have, on the last deco sessions and today's: (dont mind the messy classroom)

I was kinda waiting to see if anyone would blog on the Viriya Flag day we had last Saturday, on 5th April, but sadly nobody wanted to, so here is my version, with Bennah, LinJin and Viet at Sembawang: (might be slightly long...)

I went to Woodlands MRT for Flag Day, and was really shocked to see so many others there from Innova JC, compared to quite a miserable no. of us... Anyway, we got into our groups- LinJin, BenNah and Me in a group. I think we/Mr Koh were/was smart, (no offense to other ppl) so we went to nearby neighbourhoods. =)

Okay, I have to refer to LinJin's blog for reference now, cant tell the difference between places. Ok, so we actually decided to go to Marsiling, and walked in one direction following the MRT track. However, after walking for about 10mins, we realised we were walking in the wrong direction... We were going to Admiralty! (maybe not so smart, lol) Okay, so fine we continued walking and reached Admiralty, realising that there were no proper shopping malls there! And then we discussed about our plans return or continue to the next station, Sembawang...Being the person that I was, I said to continue and not return, lol. Anyway the distance to Marsiling from Admiralty would surely be further then to Sembawang....plus I knew that Sembawang had a Sun Plaza or something beside it, haha. So while walking, we again realised that Sembawang was actually far from Admiralty, compared to the distances between 2 other adjacent mrt stations....ok complicated. We even saw the scene of an accident, some ppl were kaypoing and some were just talking and policemen were doing their job... Ok, so we reached Sembawang, and this was approximately, 1 hour after the whole thing started. Wow we were really fast. 1 hour into the job and we still had nothing. But we just had to have a drink, and went to Mac's then started our work. Split into 2 smaller groups, BenNah and I, LinJin and Viet, who just joined us cos he was late to report to Woodlands, but TOOK THE MRT to Sembawang! My group quickly snatched what I called prime land, lol. Referring to the space between the MRT station and Sun Plaza, and we got donations pretty fast and well, while LinJin and Viet took the other end of the MRT station, where the 'business' wasnt so good. We didnt take breaks from then on, just told ourselves to work hard! Even had to endure the rain at the linkway and the hated backsplash. People just couldnt see that my whole back was wet...but thats ok, haha. I found out the secret of getting donations, and that is to give a polite greeting and a big smile, lol. Cos people would be happy and donate too, or at least a smile in return, or okay, the worst case ever is to ignore you completely. Smiles from people and nice gestures, powered me on! I also learnt how to tell whether or not someone is likely to donate. Note that these are general observations, so they do not apply to all and no offense intended.

Signs of "No, thank you":
-Avoid eye contact
-Sharp turn when reaching you
-Gloomy face
-Hide behind others
-Hands full of bags/children
-Pushing pram/trolley etc.

Signs of "Yes":
-Smiles and comes to you
-Stands at one side while handing kids money to donate
-Purses/Wallets in hand
-Just bought something
-People who come and talk to you
-Other flag day participants, lol
-People who just bought toto/4d or wants to, more lol

Interesting moments:
1. One guy who looks like he's in JC (not doing flag day too) came to talk to us about his experience at a flag day last time, and told us about how 95% of his class were slacking while only he and a girl were doing it properly, lol. And said that we were 'considered' honest already. Hey, it wasnt like we were doing it half-heartedly! But he was very nice to us, and the first person who actually told us something instead of is telling them about the organisation.

2. A lady who walked to me and tried to take out coins from her pocket, but took out toto tickets instead, lol, revealing her true intentions...so she was too embarrassed and just went off...

3. Another lady who asked me to go to her and so I did. She donated and asked me for my bag no., saying that she wants to buy 4D with it, haha

4. Two girls who finished their duty in the morning walked past us towards Sun Plaza and donated, then when walking back towards the MRT station donated again. What generous people, lol.

5. Tried to explain in malay to a malay lady, who didnt speak english or chinese. Didnt really work, but she still donated becos of our effort! In the end the only proper malay words I spoke were "here" to tell her where to put in the money and "thank you", lols. very interesting.

6. Erm, a person who walked around in pyjamas...

Later in the day at about 5.45pm, we were joined by Alvin and ZiHeng, from Marsiling and some Innova people who BenNah said 'cut us off' from the other end of the mall, lol. But luckily we were finishing our shift, so it didnt affect us too much, I could tell that most of us were quite reluctant to leave that place, cos we all kept saying "just give out one last sticker" (=one more donation). Nearly ran out of stickers, lol, luckily I took an extra set when we left, haha. Had lots of fun doing flag day the first time, and got to see how society treats these people, haha. There are good and bad sides, but its quite real. Experienced slight sore throat, dry mouth and lips, some extreme taoing, but they were all worth it and there were certain fun things too!

Went back to Woodlands by MRT this time, and returned our donation bags. The person said something like "Woa, quite heavy ah..." when he took my bag, lols. *thick-skinned*

Lin Jin's magic

Today has been a fun day at school for me, especially Lin Jin's talent show we had during class interaction. How in the world did he make the top ten cards of both decks the same when five people shuffled the cards? O_O A really nice magic trick. Okay, the second one was...not exactly easy to understand though. Anyway, continue to practice magic Lin Jin! You know how much we love it.

Then we had the CEC to adddress the class about some issues, but...ahem the monitor was pretty quiet and we didnt actually discuss much. Ok, so class decoration. I think that so far it has been pretty well-done, most of the leaves and animals are up, also the banana tree and the grass. Just have to patch up some of the gaps and use more recycled materials. Oh I just remembered the mosaic. Wonder whats up with it.

The battery collecting box is also nicely done, with quite a number of batteries already inside. So bring used batteries cos the competition is ending in a few weeks, i think. Lets win it! (together with some recheargeable batteries and charger, haha)

Note to self: Snatch used batteries before Jim does...

During recess today after the chinese essay writing competition, Mr Koh came to check up on us and found some of us in class. And we were talking about something which reminded Bennah about Shaun's large collection of sweets and offered to give Mr Koh a tour of the pencil case. He found 13 boxes...ok hope Shaun doesnt mind, and also for people not to take those sweets freely...

Interclass soccer! Today we were supposed to have one match of soccer against 3J (i think), but they didnt turn up! So its a walkover for us, but what a disappointment. Cos walkovers will automatically mean a 3-0 score, but we could have scored even more if they played lor, maybe something like 5-0, haha.

Remember about level CIP tomorrow, so report to woodlands at the allocated time, which can be found on asknlearn, in Mr Law's message. Work hard everybody! and do our part for society!
